What is prime lumber?

Prime grade lumber is the marriage of structural strength and beauty. #1 grade lumber is used for structural strength but gives more allowances for aesthetic imperfections. Prime grade (the type we use) has the same structural integrity as #1 grade but is held to a higher standard for appearance (fewer and smaller knots/imperfections). Lumber mills mark each board of lumber with a grade, and these grades refer to the quality, strength, and appearance of the wood.
